We hope you are enjoying the nice weather that we finally got today.  It was a little late arriving, but this afternoon has been really nice.  Fred got the lawn mowed - I did some trimming with my old walk-behind mower - and we're both ready for "a fig newton and a nap."

I just looked at Front Page Forum for Cabot and saw Sarah's Country Diner specials for the week.  You might be interested in taking a ride over to Cabot Village and stopping at the hardware store where Sarah's diner is at the back of the store, overlooking the Winooski.  Sarah is very pleasant, and her menu sounds really good.  Take a look:

Now that Summer is finally here we hope to see you.  Sarah Mangan, Sarah's Country Diner.

When I mentioned that Sarah's Diner overlooks the Winooski, perhaps some of you raised an eyebrow.  The Winooski is in Cabot? you wonder.  Indeed, the Winooski River originates in Cabot, high on the ridge near the northwest corner of town.  There are springs and wetlands that feed into the small brook that comes from a little body of water called Coit's Pond (above), and in Cabot Village, several other small brooks feed into the river that runs in parallel to Main Street, in back of the stores.  By the time it reaches Marshfield and Plainfield, it has become a full-fledged river, sometimes raging after spring or summer rains.  It flows northwest, into Lake Champlain.

I think I have mentioned before that Cabot Plain is the dividing line where water runs north to Champlain on the western side of the Plain, and flows south into the Connecticut from the eastern side of the Plain.  I've been told there's a delicate balance at Molly's Pond; water runs mostly north into the Winooski; but the marshes at the north end of the pond are drained into brooks that flow into Joe's Pond and thus south via Joe's Brook and eventually to the Connecticut River and the Atlantic Ocean.

This is an old postcard that shows Molly's Falls Dam in the upper left corner, and if you look carefully, you can make out the tower and the power plant below it (bottom right).  Route 2 runs diagonally across the picture, and the Groton State Forest Road shows up plainly.  This mentions it's the "headwaters of the Winooski River," and while this is partially true because the water from Molly's Brook does feed into the Winooski, the headwaters are actually several miles northwest of this particular scene.

Spring Mix!

I started this a couple days ago but got kind of busy and never got back to it. I had posted about the Route 2 construction, but that notice...
