All we need is a little encouragement! This came from Walter Ruf today:

Hi,we are sure enjoing your blogs and also the great pictures you send out to some of us who are in sunny Florida. To tell you what is going on down here it is in the 70's in day time and our pool with solar heat at 75 to 80 degrees. "It ain't too bad," like they say in Vermont! But it is very nice to get some pictures with snow from my home for most of my life. Best regards to you both, Mimi & Walter.

So, for Walter & Mimi, and all the rest of you
who aren't here to enjoy our beautiful early winter weather - I'm posting a batch of pictures we took today. That's me after I've picked up the JPA mail at the post office this afternoon - two more requests for Ice-Out tickets!

I've sent out 110 this week and had requests for 25 more in those envelopes I'm hanging onto in that picture.

Burke Mountain opens this weekend - looks ready to me! Do you remember Deb Stresing told us she had to shovel her way into her Joe's Pond Craft Shop? This picture says it all.

One thing we're sure of so far this fall/winter -- there's lots of weather so that gives us
plenty to talk about. Stay warm!

We awoke to a beautifully sunny morning today. Last night the sky cleared and the temperature dropped to near zero. Apparently there was a sifting of snow after Fred cleared everything last evening, but only enough to make things fresh and beautiful. I took some pictures (through the windows - it was cold and I didn't want to take the time to get dressed up to go outside - maybe later!) to show you just how beautiful it is.

The top photo is what I see from my office window as I sit here blogging
to you. Then I wanted you to see the north end of the pond which is about all we can see of the pond from our living room windows. We can keep track of things going on in the channel and behind the islands, but need to go for a walk down W. Shore Road to find out what's happening further down the lake.

I noticed that our flag was absolutely quiet this morning. Such a contrast to what it's been like for several days, I though that was a nice picture, too. I never fail to be impressed with the colors of
our flag against the sky, and with the snow-laden trees, it leaves me breathless.

I hope you like the pictures. Be sure you click on them to make them bigger. Tucky Sancibrion wrote recently that she has one of our photos on her desktop. I was very pleased that she liked it that much. It always give me a lift when I change my desktop picture - it's like redecorating a room.

Enjoy your day. Keep healthy, and keep those e-mails coming!

MORE SNOW!

It has snowed lightly most of the day. Hardly a hint of the sun although there were a few bright moments - but the snow continued to sprinkle down on us. Everything is really beautiful with the clean fresh snow covering the trees. Every morning there are fresh tracks on our lawn where the deer have sauntered by. Sometimes I wonder at how close they will come to the house. Our cat, Woody, keeps an eye on things from his perch in the living room window. Not much is moving during t
he daytime now, though. A squirrel or two and chickadees, but whatever is going on outside, Woody is unimpressed and remains inside where it's warm.

I snapped this picture of Fred clearing the latest batch of snow off the
deck tonight. He shovels it every day, and every day there seems to be about another foot of snow to take off. Still, he looks pretty happy, don't you think? If this keeps up, he may not be quite as accepting by spring, though. Son, Jamie, has a much bigger deck than we, so he sometimes uses a small snowblower to clear it. Bill, who's living at camp, told me a friend has offered a small snowblower to him for cleaning the snow off the decks there. I think he'd better take him up on the offer - from the start of things, this could be a deep-snow winter. Middle son, Bob, is delighted with the snow. He doesn't have a deck on his house in St. Johnsbury, so while his brothers and Fred are clearing away the snow here at Joe's Pond, he's off skiing at Jay Peak. He's been three times so far this year. He's chortling over the great conditions building. Burke Mountain opens this weekend. Winter has started off with a bang.
I had a fun e-mail this morning from "Pete." I'm going to be pretty busy today and don't know what the day will bring for blogging material, so I'm sharing this in case I run out of energy by day's end.
BOB HOPE !
For those of you too young to remember Bob, ask your Grandparents !! And thanks for the memories !!

I HOPE THIS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND IN YOUR HEART.

The Snow Continues

As predicted, we had more snow today. Cold, Windy, Wintery. I wasn't outside much, but I stopped in West Danville to mail off some Ice-Out Contest tickets to someone who wanted them for Christmas stocking stuffers, which I think is a cool idea, and for those of you who enjoy that stiff breeze that always blows through West Danville in the summer - you should have been there today!! The flag was straight out from the pole, anythi
ng that wasn't nailed to the side of the post office was flapping wildly, the snow was swirling around so you could hardly see the traffic going by. Every pickup had a plow on it, most of them caked with snow. The cars parked at the Joe's Pond Country Store while their owners went for coffee looked like they'd been there in the snow a week. I'd just had my hair cut. It looked real nice when I left St. Johnsbury. Fred said he guessed maybe he'd better take me out for dinner, it looked so good. I opened the car door and stepped out into the gale at West Danville, and there goes a perfectly good hair-do! Fred said he likes the wind-blown look. Darned good thing. The carefully shaped cut Kathy had given me turned into a flattened out cap of gray-blonde strands so charged with static electricity that when I tried to brush it out of my eyes it clung to my fingers and stood straight out from my head before slapping down onto my forehead like paper on a vacuum hose. The store was pretty quiet. Diane was up to her elbows doing some strange thing with a turkey baster in the coffee machine - I didn't ask questions. She said Garey was outside but would be in right away to tend the post office. Deb Stresing was there. She said she'd had to dig her way through heaps of snow to get into her shop this morning. Some fellow came in, checked his mailbox, muttered, "Nothing! I knew I shoulda stayed home," and stomped back to his truck. Curtis came in about then and I asked if he'd seen his dad outside. He said he hadn't, but he didn't seem alarmed so I left the package of Ice-Out tickets and told Diane I had more going out Thursday and I'd pay for all of it then. I hope Garey found his way back to the store through the swirling snow. When I stepped onto the porch, the wind nearly yanked the door out of my hand and I was glad of the railing to hold onto. The good news is, it blew my hair-do in the opposite direction so by the time I got to Diane Rossi's with a package she would deliver to Dave Parker, it looked pretty darn good again. I'll take a rain-check on going out to dinner, though. I think we'll go in July. It'll be warmer, but I bet the wind will still be blowing through West Danville.

Our Winter Storm

I guess we are kind of in the middle of our share of the big winter story. It has been snowing fairly steadily all day, but it's light and has built up about 10 inches! We had perhaps six on the ground before this storm. Fred blew the snow from the driveway three times today. Son, Jamie, was out with "The Peach" taking care of his driveway. The Town of Cabot has gone by at least three times - perhaps once during the night. Consequently, we haven't had difficulties traveling. We went to St. Johnsbury early this morning and the highway was very good. St. Johnsbury had lots of snow in the streets - but they were working hard to clear sidewalks and driveways. We forgot to take the camera with us! Fred has made up for that, though. He went out this afternoon during a lull in the storm and before he got back it started snowing again, so he got some pretty good pictures just before dark.

The top picture is our side lawn and was the first picture he took. Then the snow began. That is Jamie's tractor parked under a tarp near his house. "The Peach" is all outfitted and ready to plow - that's Jamie's, too. The result of two useless vehicles (and a few random parts) being put together to make one very efficient plowing rig. Jamie and his friend, Luke, worked hard to get it ready in time for the first snow. It works very well, and deserves it's name.

The wind has gone down, but it isn't as cold as it was last night. We are expecting more snow tomorrow, and then a respite until Friday.

So for those of you missing Vermont and the snow at Christmas, we have plenty right now and we're happy to show you. We'll try to get some pond pictures tomorrow. It looked pretty well closed in when we were by today - just some open water in the narrows and by the public beach where the current is more swift. No ice fishermen out yet, though.

This was sent to me today:
