After the Storm

All seems well in our immediate vicinity. You may have wondered if the West Hill Pond dam held - it did! Here's what Karen Larsen (select board member) posted on Front Porch Forum today:

 Good morning Cabot Neighbors-

It's a beautiful start to the day and we are grateful that the huge bands of rain associated with post-tropical storm Debby largely 'missed' us last night. As a community we had a few trees come down in the wind gusts, the rivers rose but largely stayed in their banks, and we are in good shape this morning. Spare a thought for our Vermont friends to the West and to those communities in New York who did not fare as well.

Much gratitude to Tom and the Road Crew for their patrols lasting well into the night to keep 'eyes on' our roads, bridges and culverts, and to members of the Fire Department who -throughout the night- visited the spillway and dam at West Hill Pond to watch over those structures. Everything held, and held well.

If you borrowed sandbags from the Recycling Center garage, whether for this storm or any that have preceded it, would you please return them at your earliest convenience? The sandbags are a taxpayer-funded and shared community resource which we may need again sometime in the future. Hopefully not the near future!

Have a wonderful day and THANK YOU for all that you do to care for your neighbors and our community. It takes a Village.

In Community,
-Mike, Fred, Skip, RD, and Karen

Just to bring you up to date on the road construction on Route 2 - work will continue this week in and around Marshfield and points east. Here is what will be happening this week:

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: From Monday, August 12, through Friday, August 16, on U.S. 2, crews will continue paving drive aprons on both sides of Marshfield Village. Crews will begin paving side roads from Eaton Cemetery Road through Marshfield Village, placing aggregate shoulders from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to Marshfield Village, and shoulder cleanup work in Cabot near the Marshfield Dam and Danville Hill Road. Crews will also be completing ditching work and placing stone fill near Joe's Pond in West Danville.

That is about all I have today - this morning I measured exactly 1 inch of rain from yesterday's storm. The rain was steady but there was no thunder or lightning that I observed; however, there was a lot of wind. At one point I saw 25 mph gusts registering. With the ground so saturated, I was concerned that some of my trees might topple over, but as far as I know, all are still intact. My lights flickered a few times, but the power did not go out. It would be nice if we had a quiet week ahead of us, and the forecast seems to indicate that, but tomorrow is going to be cloudy. Then a few showers Monday, just to keep things fresh and moist. Other than that, the week ahead looks pretty good. Enjoy!
