Marti Talbot sent me these two pictures taken earlier this month (September 11) on the last boat ride around the pond before leaving camp. She caught this big guy sitting on top of the tallest tree on the little island - and then got this wonderful closeup. How significant that it was on 9/11!
We have seen eagles perched on those trees in previous years, so apparently they keep coming back to spend the summer at Joe's Pond. They are predators, and although their diet is predominantly fish, they will feed on small birds, rodents and rabbits. An adult eagle can carry about four pounds, so many small animals are prey. They are a majestic looking bird, especially the adults that have the white head and tail. Thank you for sending these great pictures, Marti.
