A Dear Deer Story

Today has been kind of snowy, as predicted, and the roads are very slippery.  Fred and I walked late this afternoon, and I was glad I had my creepers on.  Fred didn't have his, but I was stable enough for both of us!  We took some pictures to show you the progress of the ice on the big pond - this is from Sandy Beach Road, in front of Jack and Sue LaGue's home.  The other two ponds are still well frozen over and now snow covered, and by Monday morning, I predict there will be no open water at all.  So, like Henretta (Splain) said this morning when she sent an e-mail to "mission control" (our Ice-Out team) - "we have lift off" - meaning the Ice Out season is officially open.

Speaking of seasons open, (this antlerless deer visited us a few days ago), it is deer hunting season, and although we haven't seen lots of hunters around here, they are out there, in red and black checkered outfits with bright orange vests and matching caps, some at deer camps, some just day hunting in the woods or driving back roads in big pickups with monster wheels.  Here's a first-hand story about a deer hunter lots of us know - and his story has a very happy surprise ending:

HI -                                                                      11-23-13

WENT TO DANVILLE THIS MORNING.   ON THE WAY OVER AT 6:10 A.M.   I CAME ACROSS A BUCK WITH  ?????? HORNS STANDING IN THE ROAD ON ROUTE  2 BY COUNTRY CAMPERS BEFORE EAST MONTPELIER.   STILL DARK.    NO GUN IN THE CAR.    DEER IS STILL HAPPY.      ARRIVED IN DANVILLE AT ROY VANCE'S JUST BEFORE 7:00.    WE THEN RODE ON ICE COVERED BACK ROADS ENDING UP IN GLOVER AT BUSY BEE DINER FOR A LATE BREAKFAST.   BACK TO ROAD HUNTING AND THEN TO HUNTING CAMP IN NORTH DANVILLE. ( THE STAGGER INN )     ROADS ARE BETTER NOW SO RODE AROUND AGAIN AND DID FIND ONE NARROW...STILL ICE COVERED.....DOWNHILL ROAD WHERE WE REALLY WENT SLOW AND EASY.

STILL ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF OUR DAY.    CAME BACK TO BARRE ABOUT 3:00.    AND ABOUT  5:30 WE RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM DOUG TO LET US KNOW MY GRANDDAUGHTER KAREN IS IN THE HOSPITAL IN BURLINGTON READY TO DELIVER MY FIRST GREAT GRAND CHILD.    WE ARE PRAYING ALL GOES WELL.
                                        LOVE AND BLESSINGS,
                                                HOMER AND MARGARET

So congratulations, Homer! Nice story, and love that you let the deer live. By now you are probably a great granddaddy - we'll expect more information on the baby and maybe a picture?
