We have rain again. It started sometime during the morning, around 8 o'clock, I think as there was a trace of precipitation in my measuring tube at 9 o'clock. It was a pretty quiet day here so we both got a lot done. The photos above show how much the trees and grass have developed in just one day's time. The grass is such a rich, brilliant green, even on a day like today it seemed bright outside. In West Danville, late this afternoon, it was beginning to get kind of gloomy, but the good news is, it wasn't awfully cold and we aren't expecting snow.

I talked this morning with Martha Rockwell, co-owner of Long Field Farm on Coit's Pond Road and Houston Hill Rd in Cabot (it's kind of at an intersection). We had a nice chat about the barn dance they are hosting at the Farm on June 4th. I tried to recall barn dances in Cabot, but I couldn't come up with any; Martha said about 10 years ago they hosted "a small one," but I didn't know about that one. I remember that there were dances regularly at Frye's Barn out on Oneida Road in Danville. I never went to one there - actually, I've never been to a barn dance - but Frye's was very popular.

This dance is for a good cause - donations at the dance will go towards painting the church in Cabot. Martha said hundreds of people use the church during any given year - meetings, weddings, funerals, concerts, church suppers and of course regular worship services, but attendance is down and the few members left are struggling to keep the church going and in good repair.

It sounds as if it will be an interesting evening, and not just because of the dance. Pete Sutherland and Friends will provide music. Many of you will recognize the name - Pete Sutherland is a well known musician, a native Vermonter who plays banjo, fiddle and many other instruments as well as writing songs and singing. He teaches music at Middlebury College as an affiliate artist. His wife, Karen, and other distinguished musicians join him to play Celtic, American southern mountain and New England music, so it should be fun just to listen to. Martha said folks should bring lawn chairs but please don't bring food or beverages. They will provide lemonade and water. Kids are welcome, so bring the whole family. Suggested donation is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Things will get going around 7 p.m. on June 4th - follow the signs from Cabot Village to get there.

You might also be interested that Martha Rockwell won many cross-country titles from 1969-1975 and was voted top cross-country skier in the United States twice, winning five of six races in Europe in 1975, placing 10th in the World Cup that year. The Martha Rockwell Award was established for top U.S. female 5k skiers. Martha was inducted into the U.S. Ski Hall of Fame in 1986.

We met another interesting person today, Andrew Hepburn, who now lives in Danville. Andrew brought us a copy of his just published CD, The Loons of Holland Pond. You'll find out more about the CD under News Items on our website and at Products. I listened to the CD and found it very nice. The loon calls are done by William Barklow, and Music is by David Budbill (another familiar name), Peter Lewy, Michey Justice and Bob Hayman. Anyone who enjoys watching, learning about and listening to our Joe's Pond loons will surely enjoy having this CD.

Andrew also asked us to help him find someone who would keep his canoe for him so he can use it here at Joe's Pond now that he's living in Danville, and if someone would do that, they would have use of the canoe.

Which reminds me - Nicky Silloway let us know today a long wooden dock has lodged on her water front. If yours is missing, it may be there, bottom side up, but apparently all in one piece.

I remember Frye's Barn very well. My husband used to play there on Saturday nights with a band called Bushwhack. We had some great times there. The family who owned the place were great.
