I have to apologize - after all my hype about the tour of the schools yesterday, I didn't take one single picture. I had the camera with me, but not the camera-man!
We had 19 aboard the bus for the tour. We made three stops and paused and passed or talked about perhaps 10 other sites where schools had been or the buildings are now but we didn't have access. Several of the group had gone to one-room schools, but not all of them were from Cabot. We had Blanche Lamore, 97, with us. Blanche went to the Lower Cabot one-room school and then high school in the village. Others went in the village or came to Cabot for high school.
Our first stop was at the West Hill school and that gave everyone a very good understanding of what many of the old schools were like inside and out. We also stopped at the East Cabot school which has been made into a very pleasant home. Our hosts, Annette and Herb Little, were very gracious in letting us go through their little house, just about the same size as the restored West Hill school house, so it gave a good idea of how the small space can be utilized. We also stopped at the Walbridge School on Cabot Plain, where Dick and Eleanor Spaulding met us and talked about their rescue of that dilapidated old school and the ensuing renovation.
We got in sort of a pickle at the South Cabot, or Hookerville, school. The road is a dead end and the loop I had expected to use to get turned around was blocked. While there are several houses in that area, all the turns were way too sharp for the big school bus we were on. Our driver, Deb Bothfeld got us out of that very tight situation very nicely - expertly backing out the way we'd gone in. The bridge we had to cross was narrow and there wasn't much "wiggle room" but she did it with no problem at all and we continued on our way, no time lost.
We got back to the village right on time and the group went on to their meeting and lunch - I went to the historical society building and then home. There seemed to be lots of people around for the flea market, but I was only there early as vendors were setting up. I think everyone had a good time.
Bob and Theresa went to the Joe's Pond Association pig roast last night and said they had a really good time and met lots of nice people. We had intended to go, but I was a bit under the weather from the heat and the day (my voice always gives out when I do these tours) but Bob brought us take-out instead so we have that to look forward to tonight.
