I had a report from Marti Talbot that she'd seen the baby loon with what looked like an injured wing. I had hoped it was perhaps just that what she saw was a foot cocked into the air over its back, like loons often do to stretch or cool off. However, this morning I received this note from Gretchen Farnsworth:
Hi Jane
I heard from Eric and our little loon is hurt it looks like a damaged
wing. Not sure if it would help but maybe people could give them some
extra space? Eric & his crew are going to monitor and may try
capture it but he’s on vacation for the week. Breaks my heart out little
guy was doing so well.
This is so sad - hopefully the wing will heal, or Eric can capture it and perhaps get it some help. This may hamper the bird's ability to dive and certainly it will not be able to fly, so please take extra precautions to stay well away from the loon family so there is less stress on them. It's hard to know what may have happened - but there are lots of possibilities, natural predators as well as possibly being hit by a boat, tuber, water-skier or jet-ski. All we can do at this point is give the loons space and hope everything turns out ok.
Thanks, Marti and Gretchen, for keeping a sharp eye on our loon family.
Today is Danville Fair Day, in case you may have forgotten! The parade starts at 11, I believe, so there's time to head there and enjoy the fun! I would normally be there, but this hot, muggy weather is way too much for me!
