From Gretchen Farnsworth a few minutes ago:
Eric and his assistant Elouise came over today and attempted to capture our injured loon. Apparently the little guy has some fight in him and they were not able to net it. They plan on coming back tomorrow night since it’s somewhat easier to capture loons at night with spot lights. Once they get it they will take it to VINs for evaluation and X-rays with a possible trip to Avian Haven in Maine. The bad news is that Eric has consulted both an expert loon vet & a loon rehabber and neither thinks there is much chance for this loon to survive. One possible problem is a nutritional or genetic defect called angel wing. It is also possible that it was caused by an attempted strike from the eagle. Either way because of the location of the injury it has limited diving ability which makes it nearly impossible for it to survive in the wild. Hopefully once they evaluate him there will be more a more optimistic prognosis but it doesn’t sound great.
I will update when there is more information.
