We had a call from Carolyn Hamilton this evening to let us know that the playhouse at their daughter's camp (Martin and Lori Underwood) was broken into recently. Carolyn said nothing seemed to have been disturbed at the main house, but the children's playhouse was trashed and some things stolen. Carolyn wants to let people know they should be careful to keep their cottages and outbuildings securely locked. You should probably have someone check your place periodically if you are away for any length of time.
This sort of thing often goes in cycles, so there may be other instances we haven't heard about. Just be vigilant and do be sure you lock things up securely.
There was a time when nobody locked their doors when they went to get the mail or out shopping for a few hours. We just trusted our neighbors. Things aren't that simple today. We can still trust our neighbors, for the most part, but people are more mobile today and with a little planning, thieves or vandals can hit a target and be gone before anyone notices. So don't make it easy for them by leaving buildings unlocked or the keys in your car.
