In today's Burlington Free Press there was an article about the State monitoring of the lakes and streams of Vermont. Due to funding issues and the Covid-19 pandemic the state cut back on the amount of testing. I am writing to inform you that Joe's Pond is one of the 25 lakes still being monitored. In 2019 there were 75 lakes being monitored.
Joanne and I are taking the weekly samples for
the State and we measure the clarity (Secchi disk) and dependent upon
that clarity, we then take two water samples at twice the depth of the
clarity. This is done at the same location in the pond. The water is
being sampled for phosphorus and chlorophyll. The results of the
testing gets published in the fall through the Lakes and Streams monitoring website.
Jamie
It is good to know that this is being done regularly again. Over the years sampling has been done here off and on by various people. Ted Chase did it for a number of years and eventually Jamie Dimick did it for a long time. After Jamie, Gina Kurrle and Marti Talbot did it for a few years, but I think it has been a while since anyone did it regularly. Thank you Jamie and Joanne for taking on this job. It is complicated and sometimes time-consuming, but worthwhile to keep track of the overall health of the pond.
