Today has been gloomy, but not quite as cold. I think it's safe to uncover or put tender plants back outside now. We've had a little more rain today, but hardly enough to compensate for the many dry days we had in the two weeks previous to this. I recorded a stretch of 12 days with no rain and one with only a trace in May. The cycle didn't end until the 30th, but even then we got about 3/4 in. and after that not much at all. We could use a little more rain. However, the sunshine and warmer temperatures will be very welcome, too.

This seems to be a big year for ticks. We haven't had a lot around our place until this year, although last summer middle son, Bob said they were rampant in the woods above our house when he went through with his dog one day. They had a tick search session when they got back here and found several on both the dog and on Bob. I've found two so far and neither of us has been in the woods - just around our lawn, but not in deep grass where you'd normally expect to pick them up. apparently they were on bushes or trees we may have brushed against at the edge of our lawn - or maybe they are in our gardens. I am very leery of them. We know how devastating Lyme disease can be, and other diseases a tick bite can cause. Apparently where there are warm-blooded animals living or passing through, there will be ticks. Not too many years ago we seldom came across a tick - but those days are gone forever. You can report any ticks you find HERE. There is an interesting interactive map on that site that tracks ticks through last year. If you look at where they are found, it turns out it doesn't matter if you are living in a town or in a rural area - they are literally everywhere. So be careful. If you are going into the woods, you may want to use one of the more potent bug sprays, like some with DEET. But even that is not a guarantee, so be sure to check yourself, your kids and your pets whenever you have been outside.

Spring Mix!

I started this a couple days ago but got kind of busy and never got back to it. I had posted about the Route 2 construction, but that notice...
