Sunrise, Birds and Pickles!

We're enjoying a beautiful day - lots of sunshine and reasonable temperatures - close to 50 at high noon.  Now the sun has dipped behind the hill so we're in the shadows, but it's still lovely looking across the pond.  I've been watching the ice behind the islands today, expecting to see all open water, but that hasn't happened.  We will be getting more warmish weather, so I imagine it will open up again in a day or so.  The channel is pretty blue water again after being skimmed over with ice topped with snow yesterday.

I was awakened this morning by a red glow from the east window.  This was the sky - beautiful, but at the same time, a little threatening.  I remembered the old saying, "Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors delight,"  however, so far, there's been nothing to be warned about, as near as I can tell.

At lunch time we were treated to the precise circling and lazy turns of a very large bird, quite high overhead, probably more over the pond than it looked - it was difficult to gauge exactly where he was or even how big he was, and even more difficult to get a picture, but Fred got this one among several not-so-good ones.  At first we thought it might be an eagle, but with the white belly, perhaps an osprey instead? or one of a number of large hawks?  Perhaps someone can identify it from this photo.  Click to get a somewhat closer view.

Here's an important message from Garey at Hastings Store:  Jennie has just made more of those delicious pickles that so many people liked this summer.  The store ran out of them, but now there are more available, and Garey wants to let you know - however, he doesn't remember who it was that was so disappointed when they ran out.  Hopefully, whoever it was will see this and get in touch with Garey.  Phone there is 684-3398.  Maybe get some to go with your Thanksgiving dinner?  Amazing that Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away.
