ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) Mar. 1, 2011 — Police in St. Johnsbury say a furnace repairman is in critical condition after being clubbed with a wrench and strangled as he was fixing a furnace.

Fifty-year-old Michael Kuligoski, was in critical but stable condition following the weekend incident. Officials at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, wouldn't give a condition update for him Monday.

Police say 21-year-old Evan Rapoza, of Danville, hit Kuligoski, strangled him with a belt and plunged his head into a bucket of water, but wouldn't say why when asked by police. The two apparently didn't know each other.

Rapoza's charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He pleaded not guilty Monday and is being held on $100,000 bail.
