We had a fair amount of rain last night. I measured .45 in. this morning. The sun is breaking through high clouds and I think we'll have a nice day at least for a while. Then it may turn sour again. And there's still snow in the forecast for this weekend. Not what we'd like ordered up for Mother's Day.
I've just begun putting together information about postal service in Vermont, with some of the information I've come across in the papers I'm preserving for the Cabot Historical Society. In the late 1700's, postal rates were set according to the number of sheets to be sent and the distance, and in 1815, postal rates were increased 50% to help pay for the War of 1812. There were no post offices until about 1790, and then mostly in the southern part of the state and up the Champlain corridor, and generally they were in stores or homes. The first post office building in Vermont was built in 1857 in Burlington.
I'm interested in fitting Cabot's postal history into the overall picture for Vermont.
Right now, Fred is heading to Walden to get a new battery for his lawn mower and I'm going to grab the camera and go with him.

We were only gone a few minutes, and shortly after we got home, we had a sudden downpour. Now the sun is out again. We saw surveyors working at the bridge on Rt. 15 in Walden (picture at right), so I looked on the VTrans site to see what is scheduled. The bridge will be replaced at some point, but not in the immediate future. Right now they are just doing preliminary work. That will be good to have a new bridge there - the old one is not in good shape. It would be nice if they could angle it a little differently to take some of that sharp curve out, too. The bridge is over Joe's Brook, which empties directly into Joe's Pond.
I also took a picture of Harry's place. He is really busy, as you can see by the number of machines in front of his shop. That is not Harry, but someone who works for him. Fred got a new battery for our lawn mower and now we're ready to mow the lawn if it dries out enough. There are spots on the lawn he may not be able to mow for a few weeks because it is so wet, but in the meantime, the grass is growing fast and already looks shaggy. The first mowing is usually slower going because there are various pitfalls such as mole mounds, branches of trees or trees themselves down. We've been around and picked up a lot of the winter debris, but there's always more after every wind storm.
Looking out my window right now it's hard to believe we may be having snow in a couple days . . . !
