We walked early this morning. This is what our driveway looked like when we started out. We had snow off and on all day yesterday, but it didn't stick. Last night the temperature dropped well below freezing so that cooled things down.

We noticed these guys through the trees when we were about in front of Encarnacion's.
They were truckin' right along, heading north, so Fred sprinted down across the field to the shore to get another shot. The field was frozen - not solid, but enough so we didn't break into the soggy earth, but we could feel it squish underfoot. We think they may have spent the winter in Danville and decided to go North to Walden for the summer. There seem to be lots of turkeys around, but this is the first time we've seen them marching up the pond. When we first saw them, they were off Scott's Point, but quite far out. They went between the two islands - you can see the rail trail on the shoreline in the second picture.

This is the sort of stuff we were walking on in the field - tufts of ice crystals formed from the warmth of the ground and water underneath.

We were looking for signs of high water along the shore, but as you can see, nothing is showing up yet. Apparently keeping the dam as open as possible is working well so far. The next few days should help slow the runoff, for the temperature is supposed to continue in the 30's and 40's. Right now outside my window it's 30 degrees, but most of the snow has already melted from the bare ground, so where the sun, weak though it is hits, there's slow melting. I'm hearing on the scanner that there are icy spots on the highways here and there. Later in the day I'll hear calls to the road crews about mudholes that need to be filled with gravel.

We haven't been on the other side of the lake recently, so don't know how those roads are, but things are moving in the right direction and with a little sunshine and warm weather, everything will be in good shape.

Another Adventure

This week turned out to be a doozie for me. I had anticipated going for a follow-up on my knee on Monday, but instead ended up in the ER at ...
