Loon Chick Is Here!

This message came from Gretchen Farnsworth this morning:

Our loons and some farther off were very noisy last night, I think they were celebrating our new little chick. They have spent most of the day up by the nest but not on it so I think there is only one. I hope people will give them space and let them teach their little one the ropes. We can’t control the eagles and turtles but humans should do better.

I heard through the  grapevine that the loons  in the 1st pond left the nest because of too much human disturbance. Maybe they will try again but so far they have not as far as I know.

I hope people will heed Gretchen's advice and give the loons their space, especially while they are nesting and when they have chicks with them. It's easy - if you see a loon in the water, just steer away. Our loons have not had very good luck raising a chick in recent years. We think that the eagles we now have in our area are probably responsible for taking the chicks, but that may not be the case. If the loons get spooked because of humans coming too close, they will leave the nest and of course the eggs will not hatch. Just be extra careful and if you see someone going too close to the loons, remind them in a respectful way that they should stay away. We love seeing wildlife on our lake, and it is up to us to protect them.
