Our weather has turned another corner and we've had a couple of really sunny days. The air is still a bit crisp, especially in the early morning (we've had two frosty-white mornings!) but oh, the beautiful nights!! It was hard to believe how much light the moon gives off these past two clear nights. Night before last I was awakened by moonshine (not the kind you're thinking!) The moon was shining so brightly in my bedroom window it woke me up. Even as I realized it was the moon, it seemed there might be a yard light on outside, so I shuffled out to the kitchen to find out what outside light I might have left on, but it was just the moon. Some of those days earlier in the week when we had rain and fog weren't much brighter. Turns out the universe was leading up to a "supermoon" tonight - also called a "Hunter's Moon." Oh, yes, and a few nights earlier there were Northern Lights, but I missed them. I think there were too many low-lying clouds here to have seen them here, anyway.
Thursday was Alba Rossi's 108th birthday. I'm sorry I didn't think to get notice out sooner but you can still send her a card. Diane sent me photos of her enjoying a little party with family. Alba's address is: Alba Rossi, Woodridge Rehab & Nursing, Maple Grove 218A, PO Box 550, Barre, VT 05641.
What a pretty lady - who would guess she is 108! Pictured above with her family, Larry, Diane, Lauren (Van Deren), Nancy, and Ted Rossi.
We don't have a lot of foliage still on the trees after all the wind over the weekend. As the foliage decreases, I'm beginning to get glimpses of the pond. There are still some large evergreens between me and the water, but thanks to my neighbor John Randall, the view is much better than it was. John needed to take out some of the big trees on their lot across the road from me and has been up here a few times to see which trees he might take out that will also improve my view. I appreciate that so much.
Years ago when my parents lived here, the lot across from me was logged and I remember my father telling about stopping to talk with the logger and jokingly mentioning that the view of the pond was getting better. As the logging job progressed, Dad realized that the logger had purposely clear-cut a very broad swath directly in line of Dad's view and he always chuckled about that kindness. That was many years ago and the trees there are all tall and huge again. I have some on my own property that should probably be taken down, but I have a special attachment to most of them since I planted them when they were inches tall, not thinking about how few years it takes for trees to become huge. I used to get small bare-root seedlings of all types from Nature Conservancy when I was a member, and even with several acres of space, I had a hard time figuring out where to plant them. Now that they are 50-60 ft. tall, I realize I didn't always pick the right spot.
Midnight: It's been a busy day today and I'm just now checking my email for the final time of the day. I've done this post in bits and pieces but I'm not going to even try to add more tonight - I will just send it off as is. I hope everyone is well, happy, and safe.
