A Little of Lots of Things!

I have been busy with messages and trying to keep up with what is happening in our area since the flood. First, I want to say how really nice it is to wake up to sunshine and blue sky!! Not a sign of rain clouds that I can see from my house - and I'm not going to go looking for them. I took a minute to look at my rain gauge records, and in the past week I have logged in 8.34 inches of rainfall. That's about a whole month's worth of rain. I looked at 2022 and the total rainfall for the entire month was only 4.30 in.  Last year was more like this year - I got a total of over 13 inches for the whole month. This year there could be more than that.

Don't forget that the Italian Dinner is tonight and also, tickets for the Cocktail Party on August 24th will be available. Find Susan Yesalonia or Nancy Buttura to get your tickets - only $10.

Here are instructions to assist with cleanup after the flood:

After a flood event, most debris can be disposed of in one container. Flood-damaged recyclables or food waste can be thrown away in the trash. The cleanup of paint, chemicals, oil, gas, pesticides, and other hazardous materials in flood-damaged basements and properties needs special care. To protect solid waste workers and the environment, it is critical that residents, businesses, contractors, and cleanup crews separate hazardous items from the trash. This includes but isn't limited to the following items: hazardous waste like paint, chemicals, oil, gas, (already mentioned above as hazardous materials), ammo, flares, unprotected sharps, propane cylinders, batteries, electronics, mercury products like fluorescent light bulbs, tires, and scrap metal.

If you are wondering about an item, better to call NEKWMD at 802-626-3532 to find out if it can be thrown out. Or call the VT Department of Environmental Conservation at 802-828-1138.

Be sure to be safe, wear gloves and eye protection while cleaning up. Secure items from children and pets. If an item is leaking, place it in a pail. Do not mix chemicals or pour them out.

Also, keep organic debris like logs and branches separate from other waste since most of this material will be handled separately.

NEKWMD will provide more information as we receive it. Stay strong Vermont! Keep it green as you clean.
