End of Season Festivities Schudule

I want to start off with a report on the recent meeting of the Responsible Wakes folks with state representatives. There is strong support for the stricter 1000 ft. from shore ruling; but there is another meeting tomorrow, August 3,  so if you want to voice an opinion, you will find more information here: WAKES.

Here we are, heading into August which is more or less the final month of the summer season. Some people are able to stay through September, and so extend the season a bit, but many Joe's Ponders have youngsters in school so summer ends when school begins. But we still have a few weeks left, and even though the past couple of nights (and days) have had the unmistakable feel of autumn, I expect there will be at least a few more really hot days ahead for us before the leaves begin to turn and the weather turns really brisk. Right now I'm enjoying the lack of humidity and the cooler temps.

There are some final activities going on this month - first, Danville Fair is this Saturday, August 5th.  Add to the usual fair fun special festivities in the afternoon to celebrate the acquisition of a Civil War uniform that belonged to Col. Addison Preston of Danville and is now safely "home" after years of being owned by others and most recently on display in Texas. The "Hemlocks" (a local Civil War reenactor group) and the Danville Historical Society collaborated to bring the uniform back to Danville. You can read more about this in today's Caledoian Record.

Tom Segale reminds Pickleball players:

Hello everyone.  We have a great number for Sat. Aug 12th’s Picklefest Fundraiser [Rain date: Aug. 13]. We are up to 30 people and it’s still growing.  Very exciting.  Please share this with anyone I may have missed.

Just a reminder that Sat. the 12th’s Picklefest is not a competitive event for several reasons.  There are way too many levels of players and also players from age 7 all the way up to the mature Mr. Don Sherwood playing.  Please keep this in mind when we are playing the games.

This is a day to celebrate the boom of PB at JP that Thierry and Julie introduced to us and all the friendships that have formed as a result.   And also a chance to raise some money for the courts as we have done in the past. We will all be randomly paired with all sorts of players so there is no real way to make it fair for everyone.   Please let me know by Aug 9th if you would like to play.  We ask for a suggested $50 donation if you would like, made out to Joe's Pond Association.  Cash is also fine.  Thx.

This will be a typical doubles tourney.  You will play with the same partner and it’s meant to be competitive.  If you need a partner let me know.

We are going to try and have 2 levels this year if we get enough people.Intermediate and advanced.  (If you would like advice where you think you should play let me know). If we get enough teams for both levels we’ll try this out so more people can play.  Last year we had 5 teams so hoping for more this year.   More info on this to come.

That's it for now.****Reminder - Potluck at our camp at 5:30 on Sat the 12th****

Susan Chatot reminds everyone that the final Sunfish Sailing Race is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 20th (rain date, Aug. 27). There will be an Awards Ceremony at Mark and Rosie Smith's camp following the race. Sailors and their supporters are asked to wear their navy blue sailing shirts for a great group photo!

This year the JPA's final business meeting will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 10 a.m. at the pavilion.

And that's it for tonight - mark your calendars!
