That’s funny
It does leave everyone sort of in limbo! What happens is that the rope gets frozen into the ice over time (the stakes were originally set up to try to prevent that from happening, but over time they've fallen over and are likely also frozen into a layer of ice) and that keeps the rope from tightening enough to pull the plug on the clock. That's why the contest rules read clearly, "when the clock stops" as being the official time the contest is over. --Jane Brown, former co-chair of the Ice-Out Contest, and now interested observer and blogger.

If it wasn't for the large pallet the cement blocks whould have probably fallen thru 2 days ago.
