I heard from Gretchen Farnsworth recently that the loon family in the big pond have found a more suitable nesting spot than the man-made platform, and are busy making it their new home. Gretchen was concerned that it is in a precarious spot if there is a lot of rain and the water level rises. We'll keep you posted, but in the meantime, please do not go near the area (the cautionary sign has been moved) and by all means, don't make waves up there that could endanger the nest as they come ashore. It has become part of many Joe's Ponders' routine to watch out for the welfare of our loon population, and that is wonderful. Not every lake or pond has such a caring community looking out for the wildlife. So, thank you to everyone who pays attention to the signs and warns others who don't that they are acting irresponsibly. It is against the law to harass the wildlife.

We have a probably identification of that person next to Ralph Hastings. Steve Larrabee told me he believes it is Leland Swasey, so we are going with that information. Which reminds me - when I was at Hastings Store talking with Garey about the photo, a woman came to the counter with a container of potato salad. It looked really good, so I grabbed some from the cooler. I have to say, that was just about the best potato salad I ever had. It had olives in it and just the right amount of seasonings - perfect in every way. The container said it was the store's own recipe.   I had son Jamie taste it and he agreed. I think he got some the following night. All I can say is you gotta try it.

We got our much-needed rain, but probably not enough to relieve the drought conditions. I don't believe our area is seriously dry, but for good crop growth, we do need rain on a regular basis. Everything is fresh and green today - and it's really cool. I appreciate the lack of humidity, but temperatures tonight are going to be in the 40s, and that is a tad too much of a good thing. We shouldn't complain; it's all better than 120 degrees like it is in some of the western states, or having floods and tornadoes like down south. Again, we have to be thankful we live in Vermont - for so many reasons.

We had a really cold night last night - I had a low of 14.4F and Diane told me there was a lot of ice around the rim of the pond this mornin...
