More on Sailing Races

The news about yesterday's Sunfish Races was interesting - it's always fun to see the results of the race and this being the last race of the season, those winners, too. It's sometimes even more fun to learn "the rest of the story." In this case, at first I heard a rumor that no less than three boats had capsized during the race, and wondered about that since there didn't seem to be enough wind to warrant that; however today, we heard from a reliable source that only one boat capsized (no name given); the other casualty was actually a near sinking! It seems that before the race began, one of the sailors had a brush with a pontoon boat. The impact didn't seem serious and the intrepid sailor (again, no name mentioned) entered the race, perhaps a little shaken, but still determined. However, not far into the first leg of the race, the boat was taking on water and in danger of sinking. Tough luck, indeed.

Another question we had when we looked at the results was, who were the people who took first and second place in the singles race? Paul-Jon Patin took 1st and Nicholas Patin took 2nd. While we don't actually know everyone in the Caledonia Cup races, we usually recognize names. Turns out the Patins are visitors at the pond - come here every year for vacation, and are experienced sailors. We hope they enjoyed joining our sailors and being on our little pond!

Had the race been today, there probably would have been more than one boat capsized! We are getting plenty of wind today, as predicted. However, the weather last night for the fireworks was perfect, if a little chilly, and all reports have been that the display was great. We could hear them but there are too many trees around our house to be able to see them and neither of us was up for walking to some point where we could see. We are at the age when, once inside for the evening, we are not inclined to go out again unless there is an emergency. I did go onto our deck to listen for the music at Point Comfort in the afternoon - but couldn't hear much over the hum of motor boats and traffic on routes 2 and 15.

It was a great way to celebrate the end of summer. A big THANK YOU to the Turner family at Point Comfort for hosting the music in the afternoon,  and to the Beattie family for the fireworks display in the evening.
