This is just a reminder to people that raccoons and bears will find your trash if you put it out the night before pickup. They might get into it during the day if there's not much going on to keep them away, but when it's quiet at night, they will find it and make a mess. More important than the mess is that these wild animals then will keep returning for an easy free meal and eventually, especially in the case of bears, will become a real problem and it could mean the bear would have the be killed. That is not something we want to have happen. Wild animals are part of our world here and they will generally not bother anyone - unless there is something attracting them, like your trash.
If you rent your cottage, be sure to alert your guests to be careful and not put trash out overnight or leave food scraps outside - even a greasy grill will be appealing to a bear. We do not want to have to euthanize an animal because it has become too accustomed to raiding trash cans.
The image of a bear going through our back yard was caught on our game camera this week. Looks like a youngster, and it was apparently in the daytime. We didn't see it at all, but he/she was probably heading for our neighbor's garden where there are lots of tender young plants and perhaps some compost to raid.
