I'm going to take a break from the computer today and try to get my shrubs wrapped for the winter - in spite of the snow. That's the best way I can think of to insure that we'll get another stretch of nice weather before winter sets in and I'll be saying to myself, I could have waited and done that when it wasn't so darned chilly. However, because that is only a slim possibility, I'm going to get it done now, regardless. At 42 degrees. it will be quite comfortable working with gloves on, and then I can relax about them. My friend, Mary Whitcomb wrote yesterday that she didn't cover her rhododendron in winter and it survived except for an occasional broken branch. The reason I cover mine is because the snow from the deck is shoveled onto it and some winters it is literally a ton of snow. It needs pruning, but I'm afraid it would be seriously damaged if it didn't have some protection. I'll figure something out - even if it's just something to slide the snow off in a different direction. The other stuff will be ok, I'm sure.
The sun is not as intense as it was earlier this morning, so that is probably the first sign of the storm that is heading our way. Best to get out there and get things done. The weather is not going to get better any time soon!
