Vermont seems to be a favorite spot for V. I. P.s to visit - we've all known about celebrities of one sort or another tucked away in our hills and on our back-woods ponds, and this weekend, Joe's Pond has one visiting, as well. I'm not saying who or where - that wouldn't be fair to someone wanting to spend a quiet few days privately enjoying what we spend the whole summer loving.
So, Mr. Vice President, we hope you enjoy Lake Hortonia - Joe's Pond has it's own public figure this weekend.
The weather has been pretty nice again today - and it looks like we'll have another nice day tomorrow and probably Sunday. I notice the temperature seems to be edging downward every day, though. I'm watching carefully because I know it's about time to bring in the house plants. Growing season is about over, and while we may have plenty more nice days, nights are going to get cooler quickly. My plants have loved being out on the deck this summer - I think they've grown inches.
I was down on the lower lawn today to check out what I thought was a maple that had

already turned. And I was right. It probably has some other stress going on besides the weather turning - none of the other maples have turned. I noticed most of the apples have fallen from our old tree, too. They never got very big this year, and they dropped earlier than usual. I was able to find a few good ones to make a little apple/onion chutney to go with our pork chops tonight. The flavor of those small apples is excellent. I'm hoping to find enough tomorrow for a little more applesauce. We've expected the deer to come down and clean them up some, but no takers yet as near as I can tell.

The pictures are first the maple tree, then the slope down hill from the apple tree; below that, my phlox. It's so pretty this time of the year. I have some red, too, but that's down by the old hydrangea bush. I noticed it's doing well, in spite of having had no care for years. That's the kind of flowers I do best!
Please drive safely over the weekend - there will no doubt be lots of traffic on the roads and in the news tonight we were warned that there will be extra law enforcement out on the highways, as well. So be careful, and enjoy the Labor Day Weekend.
