Every day we hear of more bear sightings - or about some damage they have done. Recently a metal bird feeder pole was bent to the ground in Hardwick (I guess the owner didn't get the message about not having bird feeders out this time of the year.)

The question also usually arises about how to keep bears from being attracted to compost piles. Here are some tips about that and other wise notations everyone should heed in order to keep yourself and your property safe from hungry bears. Click HERE.

We're heading into a fine weekend - best wishes to all those fathers out there who will be celebrated on Sunday, or thereabouts. It will be a perfect weekend for cooking out, indulging in dad's favorite sport or just for hanging out.

I was curious about Fathers' Day, so I Googled to find out more. It seems the first Fathers' Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, after  Sonoa Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, decided she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran. It was supported by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, and began to be promoted by men's clothiers in New York City around 1938, but it was not signed into law making it an official holiday until President Richard Nixon signed the law in 1972. Can you imagine? Isn't it amazing that even a simple, forthright and proposition that was very likely unanimously appealing to the public, could go nowhere for so many years? I wonder why it took so long.

So now we have days to celebrate about everyone in the family - Grandparent's Day is the first Sunday in September after Labor Day; Cousins Day on July 24th; Sister's Day is the first Sunday in August; Brother's Day is on May 24th; Aunt and Uncle's Day on July 26th, and of course Children's Day, the second Sunday in June.
I'm impressed! I had no idea.
