Pretty day with lots of sunshine.  It's about 50 degrees and there's a little wind, so there is a chill in the air.  Last night we had a low of 31 degrees - that is near "normal" for the first of October.  We used to expect snow by the first week in October, but that hasn't happened in a decade of so.  I'm not ready for the white stuff yet - I'd like to enjoy the crispness of fall before we get into the drudge of winter.

For those of you who read the Cabot Chronicle, this issue's "Arcana" column was my submission, not Jane McKay's - and so the mistake I made in saying Cabot relinquished the big island to Danville is mine, not hers.  A reader was kind enough to point out the error, and I have verified by the E-911 map of Cabot that both islands are indeed claimed by Cabot.  I will clear that up in the next issue of the Chronicle.

The boundary between towns was questioned again in the 1950s or 1960s, when Channel Drive was being developed.  I wouldn't begin to try to figure out that process - as I recall, taxes on the property there were held in escrow for years before a final settlement was reached.  It would be interesting to be able to document that in our history of West Danville, though, so if anyone has solid information they'd care to share, I'd certainly be interested.
