Fourth of July in Cabot

Weren't we lucky to have the fireworks at Joe's Pond last night without rain?  And then for the rain to hold off most of today so parades could go as planned?  It was hot and muggy and sticky, and it was a long day for lots of people - those who were working and those who were playing

We had the Historical Museum open and lots of people stopped by to visit and get out of the sun for a few minutes.  Fred went with me on Wednesday morning to help me get the laptop set up to play a slide show during the time we would be open today.  I think there were something like 1700 photos in the file I used, so there was a lot to see.  Most of the photos in the slide show were also in albums, and many people spent time with the albums instead of watching the slide show.

We had lemonade, home-made doughnuts and coffee available, thanks to our president, Bonnie Dannenberg, and that was a draw for lots of folks.  There were others who came to look for family connections in our resource section, or to wander through the collections of antique tools and memorabilia throughout both floors of our old building.  It was built in 1845 as the first school house in the village, and served as a community gathering place for many years, then became a tenement building and finally a shop for a local plumber before becoming the home of Cabot Historical Society.  One little girl, about eight or nine years old, asked me if there were any ghosts in our building.  I had to tell her as far as we know, there are none; but I had to admit I wouldn't be surprised if there were certain spirits with us there.  Then we had a long conversation about friendly ghosts.  Turned out she was a "Casper" fan.

Of course I took pictures - so here's a slide show of some of the parade.  I had to leave before the end and go back to my "post" inside the building to help some people who were more interested in the artifacts on display than the parade.

Some Joe's Ponders stopped by, and that was appreciated.  I met lots of interesting people - some with ties to Cabot, some just meandering through, fascinated by all the "old stuff" on display.  It was a very pleasant day, and I hope yours was, too.
