It has been a drizzly day. We've been thinking about the folks at Walden's Fall Foliage day. It seems as if they have rain more often than any of the other towns. Something about a rainy Monday, I guess. Cabot's day is tomorrow, and according to the forecast, most of the day will be fairly nice, but late in the afternoon there will be showers.
We will be getting take-out turkey dinners again this year. We've done that for several years and really look forward to it. We're having neighbors in again, so that makes it really fun.
Yesterday
we took a friend to the airport in Burlington. It rained hard all the
way over, but by the time we arrived, around 3:15, it was mainly
cloudy. There was no problem with flights, either taking off or
arriving, except one from NYC was delayed 20 minutes, but that was
because of air traffic in the New York area.
When we were ready to head home, we decided we'd stop for a bite to eat. We've heard about the Texas Roadhouse in Williston, so decided to stop there. It was the only place that seemed to be very busy, and that's usually a good sign. We weren't disappointed. For a couple of folks who watch pretty carefully what we eat these days, it was a departure from our "norm," to say the least. Especially for me. I don't often eat beef any more - it's the cholesterol, red meat, animal fat things, you know. But last night I kicked over the traces in grand style and had beef, gravy, mashed potatoes - and darn near ate the whole very large platefull. I ended up taking what I couldn't finish of the meat home, and we had it in sandwiches today.
Fred was a little more conservative and had chicken - but it was half a bird and way more of everything than he'd normally have. We were both stuffed, but I have to say, I really, really enjoyed pigging out. No ill effects for either of us - although I suppose my innards were grappling with what to do with all that heavy food and not piece of salad in sight. Even the green beans had bacon in them . . ! And in case you're wondering, No, I DID NOT get on the scales this morning. No need to obsess over this kind of stuff, I always say; I'll wait a few days, like until well after our turkey dinner (more mashed potato and gravy!!) to get the bad news. I need a little recovery time before I find out just how much damage succumbing to old, bad habits can do.
We went down to Bill and Diane Rossi's late this afternoon to meet with the folks who will be installing cameras trained on our Ice Out setup next spring. It seems early to be thinking about that, but we're hoping to have everything ready before cold weather so when the time comes there will be live video of the clock and the setup on the ice. We'll have more on this as time passes and things are put in place, but it looks like we'll only have to turn on our computers to see what, if anything, is happening during the 2013 contest. We won't miss pounding through the mud twice each day to check the clock, for sure.
Our new Ice Out clock came today - it's a beauty. Specially made to operate flawlessly in sub-zero weather, if necessary. We're hoping by mid-March we won't be having those kinds of temperature readings, but you never can tell. We'll have all kinds of photos for you to see the new setup as soon as it's all in place.
When we got home tonight, we couldn't find Woody. Sometimes he simply disappears, and even though we search what we think is every nook and cranny of the house we can't find him, but eventually he'll come wandering over to wherever we are - and usually we never know where he was hiding out. It isn't as if our house is that big or has that many places he can hide, but he seems to be a master of avoiding detection. Tonight Fred spotted him under the dining room table - not just under it, but sitting on the narrow cross piece (I think it's called a stretcher) that runs the length of our trestle table between the two end legs. I don't understand how a big 14 lb. cat can balance comfortably on a two-inch wide board, but he seemed unconcerned. Maybe I can teach him to dust it while he's there . . .
