I'm sure some of you already know about the death of Ruth Buzzi, Bob Buzzi's mother, Ruth Marion (Ladd) Buzzi.  Bob has a cottage on Route 2, but spends most of his time in Florida these days.  His address is 5227 Orchid Tree Lane, Winter Haven, Florida 33880, if you'd like to send condolences.  Mrs. Buzzi was 89.

Another sometime Joe's Ponder, Joseph John Maguire III died on May 27.  I didn't know about his passing, but he and his wife, Laurie (Ailes) are neighbors of Don and Diane Sherwood, Old Homestead Road here at the pond, and Don learned about it just before our meeting on Saturday.  Mr. Maguire was 54.  Friends may send condolences to Laurie and family at 22 Pilgrim Rd., Pembrooke MA 02359.

I had some interesting pictures from Liz Randall today.  She and John were here during the Fourth storm, and she got some great pictures.

I'm not sure whose cottage this is, but looks as if there is a utility pole resting on the roof.  In the next picture, a huge slice of earth was torn up when this big tree toppled.  We've seen this happen often in our woods.  Very often big rocks are exposed.  When I was looking for flat stones for some walls here at our house, I often found them in those cavities where trees had tipped over.  Click on the pictures to make them larger.

Liz also got some of the loon family in the big pond.  She said they were in their kayaks and enjoyed watching the loons.  The loons were apparently more curious than afraid.  Above is a picture of the whole family - the two little ones like brown puff balls, close to their mother, and their father has his head under water, probably keeping watch either for food or predators.

Our second loon family, in the middle pond, is also doing well, but there is only one chick.  There were two eggs that hatched, but only one chick survived, which is not uncommon.

I haven't had any reports on the geese for a couple of days, but I expect at least some of them are still around.

Another Adventure

This week turned out to be a doozie for me. I had anticipated going for a follow-up on my knee on Monday, but instead ended up in the ER at ...
