Those of you who are still here at Joe's Pond will no doubt notice that the barrel is back marking Sunken Island. The water has been so muddied from all the rain Jamie was unable to locate the rocks visually where the buoy is normally anchored. Bill Rossi suggested using a GPS, Jack LaGue contacted Jamie saying he had a GPS and had the correct coordinates and would help, and now it is back in place! Here's what Jamie wrote to me this morning:
Jack Lague's (and Bill's) "GPS plan" worked great! Jack met up with me after work yesterday and we set the buoy for SI. I think Jack is my new "buoy buddy"! He offered to help this fall again removing summer markers and installing winter buoys. Jack and I talked about doing a GPS reference for all the buoys this fall. Next spring, we will just follow the coordinates! By the way, Tell Rossi I said "he's one smart sob"!
Good going, guys. All it takes is a good idea and a team with the proper equipment to solve a problem. We had another good idea from Ray Rouleau who suggested a depth finder might work. Jack and Jamie had already connected to try the GPS thing, so Ray's idea was put "in reserve" in case the GPS didn't work.
In case you are wondering what's going on at the Dimick camp with lights on at night, etc., - it isn't an intruder, and they didn't leave a light on by mistake. Will, who works for Jamie at KATV will be living there this winter, so all is well.
I want to mention, though, further up West Shore Road someone took several items from a cottage sometime during the winter. Fishing rods and a child's riding toy were missing when the owners came in the spring. It seems that almost every year there is a break-in somewhere on the pond. Just be sure you keep things locked up, out of sight, and if possible, install some sort of alert system. With more people living here year around, it may be less inviting for someone looking to break into a place, but it seems as if with the economy the way it is, these types of breaks are happening more often, so we need to take extra precautions.
