I have had a question about why the beach here at Joe's Pond has been closed. I haven't spoken with Kellie Merrill, who tests the water for E.coli, but just looking at the water in the pond tells us there is a lot of "stuff" in it. It is brown and murky, carrying lots of sediment and, because it was probably at least three feet higher than normal, many septic systems around the pond no doubt failed - plus the brooks running into the pond would be carrying contaminants from farms, homes and businesses wherever there was high water along the way. It is not wise to swim in water this messed up. It's unfortunate it comes on a holiday weekend, but with more rain in the forecast for tomorrow and Monday, the situation is not going to get better any time soon.
Be careful - here's something I found that will explain E.coli contamination in water and on beaches: E.Coli
