5/5/11 -HI JANE,
NENANA ICE OUT:
EARLIEST TIME OUT WAS 4/20/40
LATEST WAS 5/20/64
29 TIMES IN APRIL
63 TIMES IN MAY
Thanks, Homer for the information and analysis. Their contest runs about the same span of time as ours, there is a span of about 30 days total in which we can expect the ice to go out - between our earliest of April 5, and latest of May 6. It will be interesting to watch both contests to see if things change over a period of years.
We're all glad to be on the other side of our contest. One would think, the ice being gone, we might be having nice spring weather with flowers blooming, trees budding, balmy breezes, frogs and birds singing. We have a lot of the above going on, but we are enjoying (?) all of it in between snow showers this morning. The good news is the temperature is around 37 degrees - yes, that's good news in this case, because the snow isn't sticking!
The grass is turning green, there are buds on the trees, flowers are poking up out of the cold wet ground, and I'm pretty sure I saw a swarm of black flies the other day. They didn't attack, so maybe they were some different variety, confused about which direction to go to get out of the cold.
Our JPA spring newsletter will be available on-line later today. The printed ones will be in the mail today or tomorrow (it takes a little time for the post office folks, Garey or Diane, to get them processed). The newsletter is another indicator spring is here and summer activities are about to begin - in spite of what the weather outside is telling us.
