You'll find a comment on yesterday's post asking about the condition of the snow on the pond. I'll try to answer here as best I can, not having been down there to actually experience it.

We found out yesterday that before the last rain/snow storm the ice was 24 inches thick. I would believe that measurement is solid ice. On top of that there has been a layer of slush and now a thick layer of snow. However, that being said, tonight the weather is due to change again and while we may get a few inches of new snow, that is going to change into rain for tomorrow and Friday. This will have a huge impact on the ice - reducing the snow pack to slush and according to predictions, there is no significant drop in temperature to freeze things up again, so I expect the slush will remain and the hard ice will be melting with the warmer water flowing into the pond from the brooks and melting snow on the hills around the pond. This may be a year to get the ice shanties off the ice sooner than the March 27th date the state set.

The snow today is dry and settling under bright sunshine, that will all change with predicted spring rains for the next few days and there will be flooding in the valleys.

Remember!
