While we're in for a rain-soaked weekend, Fred's brother Tom and wife, Ellie, are skiing at Vail, Colorado today. Tom has a few days off and he's taking a busman's vacation away from his ski instruction duties at Beaver Creek. They'll be heading home in about a month, so he wants to make the best of the great weather and ski conditions in the time they have left there. This picture was taken from the gondola at Vail.
I just heard the official forecast given out to area road crews: It's changing over to rain with sleet in some places, rain in Montpelier, still fine snow here, and they are being told there will be rain everywhere in our area from this afternoon through Sunday, with temperatures ranging mostly above 32 degrees. They expect some pockets with lower temps, but the danger now is mainly flooding with possible icing in those pockets. My thermometer is now reading 33 degrees, up a couple of degrees from this morning. We still have a stiff and gusty south wind.
This notice just came to me:

Washington Electric Cooperative has permanently raised their rates 23.81% (starting in Jan. 2011) - but the Public Service Board is asking for public reaction to the increase as they haven't actually approved the increase yet. If they don't approve it because there is too much public concern, then you would receive a refund for the months of increases (just the 23.81%) you have already paid. If you are a customer of WEC and are either concerned about the impact of this increase on your business or home electric bills or conversely, welcome this increase in your electric bill then come to the Public Hearing on Tuesday, March 15th at the Old Brick Church on Route 14, in the village of East Montpelier at 7:00 PM. If you are unable to attend, you may also submit written comments either electronically or by mail (please include the Docket Number - which is Docket Number 7691) with your letter or email:

A few days ago Jack LaGue sent this picture to us knowing that Fred has piled lots of wood over the years. I don't think Fred will try anything quite this fancy . . .
