I scooted to Danville to get my flu shot this afternoon and on the way back went up to Erdmann's to see the piece of marsh that washed into their cove during high water. It is massive. Now the water level has gone down, it is no doubt resting on the bottom and if left there, will take root . . . not a good thing judging from where it's located.

This is one of the largest pieces of real estate I've seen floating in the pond, but every time there's high water this seems to happen. The marsh land is probably more vulnerable because it has so much floatable, spongy vegetation and is only loosely clinging to an already muddy, insecure bottom.

From there I sent up Harrington Hill Road to connect
with Brickett's Crossing Rd. It is a very steep climb up Harrington, and the road is rough, but passable this time of year and the view from there is great. This picture is of the steep part after I'd crossed the bridge over Joe's Brook. The brook looked a bit high, still. I don't think we really need more rain, but I guess we're going to get it starting on Friday, along with lots of wind.

I stopped briefly to take this picture of Cabot Plain. The Sousa farm's twin silos show up on the left.
It's a wonder farmers were able to scratch out a living for so many years on that wind-swept plain. The growing season there is shorter than in either Cabot Village or West Danville by at least two weeks. Even where we live, which is on the east side of the Plain, we don't get snow as soon as people living on the Plain because of the elevation difference. There is so much wind that hilltops are whipped almost clean of snow some winters. But where there are gullies or hollows, the snow will drift in so deep you wonder if it'll ever melt.

Speaking of snow, I hear the forecast this noon and they are saying higher elevations can expect some snow with this nor'easter that's supposed to hit us Friday and Saturday. I guess we're ready for it . . . !

I had this note from Homer Fitts:

HOMER

My friend who has a home in North Danville and will soon move here permanently, sent this message:

We got to visit the Danville Historical Society this time and found out that there used to be a saw mill on Houghton Brook at one point. My little boy actually found a metal crank from an ice cream maker that I researched was made between 1890 and 1900. He loves to play around with his little metal detector! Beautiful photos from your trip to Willoughby and we did try Parker Pie too and it was outstanding. We got the spicy shrimp pizza and now everything pales in comparison. Can't wait to get it again!
Take Care!
Tammy

I understand Parker Pie has completed renovations and has expanded quite a bit now. When we were there they were working on one end of the building, adding on, but it wasn't open yet. They also have live entertainment some nights. It is a fun place, and the food was really good. We will definitely be going back there.
