This is what our day started out like - cloudy and sort of threatening, but by the time we got down the road a bit the sun was breaking through and it seemed quite pleasant. It's still sort of "off-and-on," but so far there hasn't been any rain and it seems as if the sun may stay out for a while, at least this morning.
We were without phone service last night. We have Skype, so we were able to get in touch with the phone company, but didn't get our regular service back until just a few minutes ago. Our DSL was also down for a few minutes this morning. Funny how isolated one begins to feel when these services aren't available. When I was growing up, we didn't have a phone at our house until I was nearly out of high school, let alone anything like the internet. When someone wanted to reach us by telephone, they would call my grandparents at the farm and my grandmother would come out to the end of the house and holler, "Yoo-hoo," until we either saw or heard her, and then we'd run up to take the call or she'd relay the message. It was some distance between the farmhouse and our house, so sometimes messages were a bit garbled - lost in the wind.
However, we're all set now with everything working. Bill Rossi just came by to see if we were back on line all around, and said several others along W. Shore Road and Meadow Lane were without their land phones, too. So now we're all thinking, "It's probably because of the construction on Sandy Beach Rd."
We walked down to see how things are progressing on the new house, and here is a slide show. It's still a big mess, but taking shape rapidly. Someone said as fast as they dug, the hole filled with water - and that's no surprise since that's all filled land, having been swamp until sometime in the late 1940's or early 1950's. I guess the folks doing the foundation know how to handle situations like that - there are a few tons of crushed rock there now. Here's the slide show:
