Another busy and very nice day here at the pond. We walked early, and the sun was just beginning to rise over the fog bank that had settled over the water. Our tamarack trees were glistening with moisture, but it wasn't frost. I had covered our tomato plants again, just in case, but so far we haven't had a frost. I took this picture from our living room window just before we left. By the time we got to the work site on Sandy Beach Road, the sun was quite nice. The contractor was there today, sealing the foundation. He was working alone and we stopped to chat. Turns out he's well known to lots of us here at Joe's. He's Dale Bird, son of Janet and Ed Bird who had a cottage here for many years. Ed died several years ago, but Janet passed away only last year, I think. She lived on Rt. 2, not far from Larrabee's Building Supply.
Dale (that's him sealing the foundation) said the foundation is done except for sealing and they will put the decking on shortly and begin construction. He will be working with Dave Lavely, who built Jim and Karen Desrocher's home on Old Homestead, actually next door to the Morris cottage which used to be Ed and Janet's place. They plan to have things closed in within six weeks or so and will have the place finished by May 1 so Richard and Carmen (Gagne) can move right in.
Turns out when Dale first started carpentering, he worked with my dad, Aaron Bolton, when they both worked for Gravett and Swett, out of St. Johnsbury. Dale was also one of the founders of Goodfella's Restaurant quite a number of years ago, but he said it didn't take him long to figure out that wasn't what he wanted to do and he went back to carpentering.
This picture shows you how the fog was just lifting over the water when we were there. While we were chatting, Butch Bouchard, whose cottage is next door to the site stopped over. I expect there will be lots of visitors watching the building going up. We were expecting John Hammer, our plumber, this morning, so we let Dale get back to work and headed back up the hill.
John came as planned and did a little work on our water tank, which is almost 50 years old, so we think we just may have been living on the edge a little with this one and perhaps it's time to get a new one. We've made arrangements with John and will have a new one installed soon. Fortunately there's no emergency.
From there our day got busier with the usual Saturday chores, and after lunch Fred went out to mow the lawn, perhaps for the last time this year, and I realized I'm already tired of covering the flowers against the frosty nights, so this afternoon I dismantled all the boxes and I won't need to cover as much now - we'll just have to worry about the tomatoes.
Every year about this time I have to rearrange the garage, partly so we'll have enough space for the winter's wood, but mostly because I'm putting away garden stuff and somehow things get out of place during the summer and I know if I don't store things where they've always been I'll spend frustrated hours searching for them in the spring. I don't know how it happens that things get so jumbled up during the few short summer months out there, but it always happens. I end up rearranging and even sometimes throw stuff away. Not often, but sometimes.
While Fred was busy mowing, I was able to get most of my stuff put away so he should have room now for the wood and for the snow blower in a few weeks. He's outside bringing in more wood now, and I'll be headed into the kitchen shortly. We'll both be good and tired tonight. I'm not sure if we'll need to cover things tonight or not. Perhaps we'll wait for the weather forecast. Right now it's a nice 65 degrees and I'm betting (hoping) we won't need to cover anything.

When I went out to get the paper Friday morning around 6AM, our van was covered with frost. It didn't last very long but was there.
