We had a much nicer day weatherwise than expected. It was lovely and sunny most of the day, but in the afternoon began to get really muggy and the clouds began to form. Late this afternoon there was quite a bit of thunder and some rain, and tonight there are thunder storms rolling through. Nothing too severe so far.
We went to West Glover to try out a new pizza place called "Parker Pie Company." Bob and Theresa are at camp for a week and for many years it has been a tradition for us to get together for lunch sometime during their week here. We've been to some great spots, but I have to say, this probably was the most unique we've hit.
First of all, this seems to be one of those situations where the road goes between the house and the barn. Well, that's what it seemed to me. Only now there is another house across the street next to the barn that I think is part of the Parker farm, too. The pizza place is directly across the street from the farm and looked to perhaps have once been a house. West Glover isn't very big, but it's big on farming. The front of "Parker Pie Company" is a convenience store called "Lake Parker Country Store," and in the back is a bar with several tables and there's a big deck on the south side overlooking a large lawn with picnic tables and umbrellas. There was also a huge white tent set up with extra large picnic tables inside. It looked as if there might have been a big gathering there recently and there was a fire pit close by, or maybe it's used nightly for an overflow crowd when they have DJs. I wonder why we didn't get pictures of the outside, but I guess we were too busy observing and once our food came, busier still eating.
We agreed the food was excellent. There were a few flies, but eating outside that's expected. They weren't troublesome and didn't seem to be interested in our food at all, just wanted to sit on the table in the sunshine. There was a lot of space and toys for kids, and several families were there enjoying the casual atmosphere with the kids romping on the grass a little way from the tables.
We went to East Hardwick and up Rt. 16 to W. Glover, taking Bean Road out of Glover. We decided to go home a different route. It may have been a little longer, but it was beautiful country. We left West Glover on County Road and stopped briefly at Lake Parker, which was just up the road a bit; then in a few miles we hit Andersonville Road which took us to East Craftsbury and to Rt. 14 that brought us to Hardwick. We could have taken a left turn onto Craftsbury Road that would have taken us to Caspian Lake and Greensboro, but we wanted to stop at a store in Hardwick. I've put together a slide show of first the little pizza place, and then the countryside. Parker Pie Company, etc.
It looked to us as though they may be enlarging and improving the building so the restaurant will have more space. It was crowded when we were there, and we didn't really expect that on a Monday for lunch. They had lots of items on their menu - in fact, here's a link to their web site. You'll find the complete list of specials on the menus. www.parkerpie.com Service was good, and I have to say the pizza we had was excellent. Theresa had a huge salad and said that was exceptionally good, too. We think fresh vegetables must have made the difference. Our pizza had fresh basil and tomato . . . very nice. We ordered a large one and there is enough left over for our lunch tomorrow!
A totally nice day and more good weather in the forecast. Fred is asking if I'll go with him to Littleton for the 5 a.m. opening of the new McDonalds restaurant . . . I guess you know I turned down that invitation. I think their new location will be great, though. Apparently they'll have window service 24/7. That will be handy for people traveling on the interstate and the old golden arches will show up plainly to entice people to stop. Probably a really good move for them.
