Pretty darned hot today. I heard some weather person say we mind it more here in Vermont because we just aren't used to hot weather. I guess he had that right. I wonder that anyone can adjust to weather this hot and humid, though. I always pity the people who have to work outside in the blazing sun. I was able to stay inside most of the day and about the most I moved around was to keep the window shades down on the sunny side of the house or put them up after the sun was off them. I don't like living in a dark house too many hours at a time. We have enough gloomy days without shutting out the sunny view when we have one. Even when I don't want to be out there, I like to be able to see the sun sparkling off the pond and making shadows on the hillside across from us.

I had a lot to do today that kept me at my computer. I met a couple of people needing information at the historical society yesterday, and I was able to find answers for them today; then I had an email from someone who had tried to find a cottage his grandfather had owned years ago, and I was able to help with that. I get a lot of that sort of thing - someone revisiting their childhood days, usually to show their kids where they'd had so much fun growing up. Not everyone is lucky enough to just come back here to live, as I do, close to where I grew up.

We were surprised this morning when three Cabot students came by to do bottle pickup. Turned out the had to change the date last minute. I hope some of you were around here on W. Shore Rd. to give them your returnables. Nice kids. One, Caleb, is a neighbor. They're raising money to go to Belize for their science class in the spring of 2011.

We were noticing when we were in Cabot Village on Saturday there are several houses for sale. Fred got pictures of two of them. This one is next door to the Historical Society building and abuts the school campus in the back. It belonged to our friend, Morris Morey, who died a few months ago. He was a well known clock maker in the area.

This red house is across from the Common and the school, and is much older than the one above. Notice the slant window on the second story of the main part of the house. Both these houses are right on Main Street, close to the stores and post office. There were a couple more further up the street, too. I think this happens every summer. People put out the "For Sale" signs hoping a summer visitor will be interested, and if not, it's ok and the owner will spend another winter here and try again in the spring.

The building that was an inn and had a little restaurant a while back is being auctioned again in a few more days. It was up for auction some time ago but apparently nobody met the reserve. Now the rules have changed, so it may be a real bargain. Besides being an inn and restaurant recently, in a former life it had an insurance office and a barber shop there. Probably there were many other businesses over the years, but it's still a lovely building. One year during Fall Foliage, a local artist displayed her work there. That was really nice.

It's still very hot. There's a little breeze coming in my window, but even with the overhead fan going, the air isn't moving very much. Perhaps the house will get cooled down a bit before we start all over again tomorrow.

Today we found several small green tomatoes already on our plants. I can't believe they are forming this early. Some years it's been August before we've had even green ones. I haven't had to water the garden yet because we've had enough rain and even after several days without rain, under the hay mulch the soil is still nice and damp. Most of the string beans are looking good, but there are a couple of plants that took a hit from bugs or something. I could never find anything on them, but they are pretty sickly. The peas are beautiful with blossoms - I didn't get them in quite as early as I should have, but they'll be fine.

It's so hot tonight even Woody is content to stay inside. That's a switch. That will give the mice and squirrels a break. Keep cool.

Catching Up

As our lovely autumn days begin to turn a bit chill and dreary - the transition from October to November is like that  - I want to share so...
