This picture is the road as we came onto Rt. 2 this morning. Not the best, but not the worst, either. We were bound for St. Johnsbury to shop and get haircuts, and left about 9 a.m. We could see the snow blowing off the ice, and while W. Danville looks pretty nice in the photo, it was really darned cold. Not many folks moving about, either.

We had bright sunshine all day, but the temperature didn't get as high as expected and there was a brisk wind - in fact, it was an evil, bone-chilling blast that even made parts of St. Johnsbury frigid. We expect wind at Joe's Pond, but once over the brow of Dole Hill, we generally escape the worst of it, and in St. Johnsbury, it's mostly protected from the north and west winds. However, as we came out of White Market on Portland Street, it was COLD. Jane Milne was there and we both remarked it felt more like West Danville than St. Johnsbury. Later when Fred and I were at the mall it was even colder facing into the wind in the parking lot there. The thermometer on our car registered 16 degrees as we left St. J. The good thing in St. Johnsbury was that there wasn't as much snow to blow around as there is at Joe's Pond. Marty's was busyas usual, and as we left Danville Fred took this picture to document gas prices. I guess it's a man-thing.

There still seem to be plenty of snowmobilers around, although we've heard there isn't enough snow on some trails - it wears out quickly, perhaps because what we've been getting is so light and fluffy.

This picture of
Main Street looks pretty nice, serene, almost spring-like, and not much snow. It was fairly quiet in town, but at the mall there were a lot of sales going on, so it seemed busier than usual. However, we don't often go up there, so it's hard to know if this was an unusual day.

There seemed to be quite a bit of activity among ice fishermen tod
ay. They are a hardy bunch. Speaking of hardy folk, Bill and Diane Rossi went skiing at Burke today. Bill told Fred he wasn't cold, but Diane went to the top of the mountain and said it was really cold up there. You can see the snow blowing down the lake in these pictures, especially the one of the truck. Still, we can feel the difference in the heat of the sun if you can get out of the wind. We know spring is inching its way here. I think interest in the Ice-Out Contest is beginning to pick up, too. Seems like we've had more tickets coming in the mail; but our outlets aren't doing much, so I guess it is all those Christmas gift tickets that our members gave out that are coming in now.

This will be a very busy week with the Fourth of July activities and every community in the north country having picnics, parades, and fest...
