This from Kellie Merrell today, sent to us and to Mert Leonard, administrative assistant at

Below are the results from this year’s E. coli testing I conducted for the town. I’ve attached graphs from the last 6 years of testing for comparison. Again, all the readings taken fall well below both the state and federal standards and show the beach is safe for swimming. This is the fifth year I’ve volunteered to sample and since we have never come close to exceeding the standard over that time, I think the exceedance measured by the town health officer in 2004 was most likely due to the sample warming up on transport to the lab, not being delivered within the short holding time or being contaminated with sand kicked up from the bottom when the sample was taken. At any rate, good news for the town and those who enjoy swimming at the beach!
Best regards,

I believe the change in State rules for septic systems early this century was also a driving force behind the clean-up in pond water. Many ponders changed or upgraded their systems to meet the new standards leaving us with less contamination.
