We've been very busy - lots of things going on, people around, good times. I hope everyone was able to celebrate the Fourth happily despite the changeable weather. Unfortunately, some people celebrated at the expense of others. I didn't check my e-mail as often as usual this weekend (really busy), but here's one of the messages I found waiting for me.
Sometime between the end of the fireworks Friday night and Sunday morning we
[Pearl Island] had more vandalism at the island. Sheri found it Sunday morning (9:30 AM) when she went out with friends.
You can see from the pictures that it's a wonder they didn't burn it down! Matches strewn on the floor, the chimneys on the lamps burned way too hot, etc.
They smashed the two wooden doors, one of which Sheri was able to put back together. In the picture (green door) you can see where it was split right down one board. She didn't remember she had her camera until after band-aiding one door. Isaac went out Sunday PM and cobbled the other door so people can't walk right in.
We are looking for info if anyone saw/heard anything. Sheri did talk with both the L
ewis camps on either side of our landing and they didn't see or hear anything.

I don't know if the Pearls let the police know or not - there have been a lot of break-ins on other lakes and ponds this year, and perhaps there is some connection. On the other hand, it looks as if someone wanted a place to party; it's unfortunate they felt they had to break into the cabin and trash the place, though. If anyone knows anything or saw something unusual, please let Liz know.

On a brighter note, I had this e-mail from Ken Hoeppner who addressed our meeting on Saturday about the rail-trail:
Jane ,would you please give a hearty thank you to the association for allowing me to present on Saturday. When the box was passed there was $163 donated from all the folks. Please extend thanks for that also. Ken Hoeppner
Ken will be sending more information to me about the rail-trail fund raising effort so we can post it either here or give it other space on the web site. I'll let you know when I have more for you.

I did talk with the State Police this AM, Monday about the vandalism done at The Pearl Island over the 4th of July weekend. So they are aware and will have the Marine Patrol be on the look-out for things amiss.

I don't know if this will help but we live right in front of the island on Sandy Beach Road. I did not see anyone wout there on Friday night but when we went around for a boat ride early Saturday afternoon, we noticed the door was open.
