We're just back from a snowshoe walk in the woods.
The sun had gone in soon after lunch, but it was still very mild, right about 30 degrees, I think. There is a tricky crust under about three or four inches of light snow, making the going kind of hard. With Fred breaking trail, it was easier, but even then, there were big slabs of crust just waiting to trip us up. I took one of my walking sticks and that helped, although sometimes it broke through the crust unexpectedly, other times it slipped on the icy surface, so I had to be careful. You'll see Fred taking a tumble - the one I took pictures of was fake - I didn't get a shot of the real one, because he had the camera. There was no harm done to him or the camera.
I came close to falling a couple of times - it was one of those days when everything looked the same and I had difficulty telling where the dips and hummocks were. Sometimes it was like stepping off into space, and other times more like stubbing your toe.
You can see in some of the pictures that we get a glimpse of the pond from our woods - more so now than when the leaves are out. It's very peaceful there, though. We saw a few tracks. The crust makes it easy for the bunnies, squirrels, coyotes and foxes to roam through the woods, but we didn't see any deer tracks today. It would be very difficult for them because they'd break through the crust and there is still a lot of snow depth in the woods.
We had fun last night half-heartedly watching the game with Bill and Diane Rossi. We had pizza from the Walden General Store - very good - and finished with Diane's chocolate chip cookies, my brownies, and ice-cream. That's why I needed to get outside and exercise today . . .
Now I need to settle down and get back to work. Here's the slide show for anyone interested.
