Cold Again!

We are in a string of really cold days. Today is slightly warmer than it was yesterday - it got out of the single digits above zero around noon, but is now slipping downward towards another really cold night. I registered a low of minus 5 degrees overnight and it may get even lower tonight. But then we warm up!

It has been amazing how bright the sky has been for the past several nights. There was a Wolf Moon starting January 2. That particular night when I went to bed I actually thought there was an outside light on and opened the blinds to investigate. Then I remembered that there was a full moon, a Wolf Moon, out there and the forcasters had said we wouldn't see it because of cloudy conditions in our region. The bright night sky has continued - last night wasn't quite as bright and it was really cold, so I didn't raise the insulated blinds to see if I could find the Wolf Moon, and I'm sure it's not as impressive now.Full moons often stir superstitions and each has special meaning in different cultures. No wolves howling that I heard.

Animals definitely react to change of seasons and temperature. Jamie and Marie have two cats, Joe and Moe, who probably get pretty bored with winter and being confined inside. Moe is pretty laid back and often stretches out in front of the pellet stove near Jamie's work station in the basement. Joe is less inclined to be social, but Jamie said that recently Joe has taken up a position in front of the pellet stove where he just sits and stares at the fire. He doesn't blink or move - just watches. The only movement is the blaze, the sparks, and the pellets shifting as they burn. I think it's the equivalent of humans watching Hallmark movies. His tail is curled, I wonder if it twitches!?

Both Joe and Moe are handsome cats - Moe is mostly all orange, and they came to live with Jame and Marie together - rescued when their previous owners could no longer keep them. They have had health issues, and Moe has no teeth, so he needs special food - but they are happy kitties and get lots of love and attention. Of course like all cats, they rule!

Just a quick note: I've had some interesting feedback on the video of building Molly's Falls dam and reservoir. I'll probably put something together for the Cabot Chronicle soon. I had hoped there would be more to the story, and slowly, it is evolving, thanks to people who have responded and especially Anne Donahue (Representative Anne Donahue in our State Legislature) who gave the photos to us. She was pleased to see the video and has filled in some blanks about her grandfather for us.Wonderful history, and I'm so happy she thought to share the story and photos with Cabot Historical Society.

Be warm, safe, and stay healthy! A warm-up and "January thaw" is coming to our region - I hope wherever you are the weather is fair, warm, and calm!
