Some readers have asked if a drone light show might replace traditional fireworks. It is my understanding that the JPA Board looked into that and even a very short show would be prohibitively expensive; however, in time and with competition, prices may come down in the future. Another problem with that is finding a company within a reasonable distance to do a drone light show. Not all drone operators are equipped for that sort of display.
Here is a site I looked at: https://www.thedronegirlccom/2020/08/17drone-light-show-costs/
Apparently Burlington incorporated a drone light show with their fireworks this year to commemorate National Life's 175 years in business. Perhaps someone connected to National Life would could give us an idea of the cost or at least could tell us what company put the show on. Also, it would be interesting to know how it turned out. Did anyone see it, or was it filmed by WCAX, perhaps?
That is another point that will no doubt be brought up at the final JPA meeting of the season, and there are several issues to be discussed and voted upon. It is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the pavilion, and it looks as if the weather will be darned near perfect.
I just received an update from Responsible Wakes folks on the current Wake Boat Issue.
There is always a bit of sadness about the final business meeting of the year - many folks will be leaving after the holiday weekend and slowly but surely, residents around the pond and the activities associated with summer will dwindle. Those of us who are year 'roundeers will soon be switching lawn mowers for snow blowers and water skis for snow boards. The buzz on the pond will be snowmobiles instead of motor boats, and there will be far fewer lights defining the shore of the pond. Then there will be ice fishermen and their families and friends who seem to be out on the ice in all but the very worst weather. They are a hardy bunch!
I had to go to Danville yesterday morning and noticed a number of maple trees already showing a bit of color. I have a couple near my house that are turning - altogether too soon. I thought perhaps with all the rain our foliage season might be delayed, but I think it may arrive even sooner than some years. It's hard to determine when the color will come or how brilliant it will be. The trees have retained a rich green longer this year than most, it seems to me. Usually they are beginning to look dull and "tired," but leaves still look vibrant and most show no signs of drying out - how could they with all the moisture this year? We will have a nice sunny stretch after some today's rain, and we'll officially close the summer season on a high note of summery temperatures. Finally!
Here is another indicator of the end of the summer season:
