IMPORTANT NOTICE:
We have gotten several inquiries this week about the safety of swimming
in the pond following the flood. The town of Danville has chosen to
close the beach area until the water can be tested early next week. I
was just made aware of this advisory from the State of Vermont Health
Department and have taken a screenshot of their recommendations. [On right]. In case
you are not able to open the screenshot, they advise not swimming in
Vermont lakes and rivers until the debris has settled. When I last
checked yesterday afternoon the pond remained quite murky. Please be
safe.

This has been quite a week! We are now heading into another weekend and according to what I just heard on WCAX, we can expect more rain in the next few days - mainly Sunday into Monday. That is not good news. With the ground already saturated and streams and ponds just beginning to return to somewhere near normal, we could be looking at another rough time battling high water, and watching some of the work that's been accomplished in the past few days repairing roads completely undone. It is very difficult to predict where these storms will actually hit and especially how much rain, wind, or damage there will be in any given spot, but we need to be ready for whatever.
If you cannot be at your cottage at Joe's Pond - or at any other pond that might experience high water - be sure to put your water toys under cover and tie down anything that will float away. If you have boats moored at your dock, arrange to have someone check on them if there is a lot of rain. Usually these small steps will prevent loss or damage.
If you go out on the lake today, please be aware of possible floating debris. With waterfronts already damaged or soggy from being under water, please be respectful and don't cause excessive wakes that could do further damage. I'm hoping we don't get high winds anytime soon because the ground is so wet, it won't take much to topple large trees.
Most roads are open at present, but there are some detours and plenty of one-way traffic spots, so if you need to go somewhere, you can probably find a way. Keep in mind that some towns have businesses that are not really open for business yet, so call ahead to be sure wherever you need to go is open. |

Earlier this week when Jamie and I were on our way to West Danville to look at the dam, we came upon a couple of men on West Shore Road who gave us their business cards. One was the "Independent Tree Climber," who does all sorts of tree removal, trimming, storm damage cleanup, brush cutting, stump grinding, and is certified. He is also offering a 10% discount for storm damage. His number is 802-487-7332, and he offer 24-hr. emergency service.
The other is Dylan Barcomb, out of Newport, who does plumbing, heating, and refrigeration. He also offers 24-hr. emergency service, and his number is 802-323- 4166.
We don't know anything about either of these men, but it's always good to have options, especially when all these types of service people are so busy. These were both young men, probably just getting their businesses started.
It seems I've been writing very serious bits every day for far too long, so here's something I think you will appreciate. This picture comes from Mary Whitcomb - I don't know where she took the photo, or when, but she sent it to me recently and it was just what I needed to step out of this gloomy, serious mode we've all been operating under recently. I hope it works for you, too.
