Sad News

I'm sad to report that longtime Joe's Pond resident, Ted Chase, III, passed away peacefully last night at his home on North Shore Road, with his wife, Barbara and step-daughter-in-law Olivia at his side. Ted had celebrated his 83rd birthday on May 8.

The Chase family has owned their cottage, "Harmony Lodge," on Joe's Pond since 1919 when Ted's grandparents, Theodore and Julia Chase, purchased the property from  Ralph Sulloway. Joe's Pond was more than a summer retreat for both Ted and his father, who turned the cottage into a very comfortable year-around home that Ted and Barbara have cherished over their years together. Ted had many friends here. He was known as a big-hearted, sociable, go-to guy who was always willing to help his friends and neighbors. He loved Joe's Pond and was a big supporter of the Joe's Pond Association and the rail-trail. He was often the first to be out on the pond in his boat, and the last to hang it up for the winter. He was often seen literally skating on thin ice while neighbors held their breath fearing the ice might not hold him. We will miss his antics, his good nature and easy-going style. My thoughts are now with Barbara and her family as they move forward, and wish them strength, peace, and lovely memories.

Cards and messages may be sent to Barbara at P.O. Box 142, West Danville, VT 05873.
