Sad News

This came this morning from Gretchen Farnsworth:

Good morning,

We just heard from Eric and the decision was made at VINs to euthanize our little loon. There was tendon and soft tissue damage as will as a broken wing which they did not believe could be repaired in a way that the loon could fly or dive well. It’s sad to lose the little one but at least it won’t die slowly on the pond here as winter sets in.

Whatever happened to injure the young loon, this sad story reminds us that we all need to be mindful of the wildlife here. This is a very busy body of water, and we must be aware we're sharing it with animals as well as humans. Sometimes there is conflict; sometimes we can intervene to successfully solve problems; but sometimes the outcome isn't positive. The story of the little loon is a sad way to end our summer, but the loons will come back in the spring and try again - and that is a hopeful sign.
